SUNY Facilities
Facility Inventory
The State University of New York's (SUNY) facility inventory is maintained at the building and room (space) level. The former is referred to as the Building Characteristics Inventory (BCI) and the latter is the Physical Space Inventory (PSI).
The PSI is a database of all spaces in every building owned or used by the campuses. General information about the buildings are recorded on the BCI. The BCI has about 3,000 building records. The PSI has about 300,000 space entries. Information in both databases covers all SUNY state operated, statutory and community college campuses.
The PSI record's data relate to the physical characteristics of the space - size of the space, departmental assignment, number of occupant stations and type of space. All spaces within the building are reported. This includes rooms used for academic/support, research, administration, residential and public service. Mechanical and circulation spaces are also reported. The PSI is used for numerous applications, including campus space management, campus facility master planning, statistical analysis and various State and Federal reporting requirements.
PSI also supports station utilization (community colleges are not included in station utilization reporting) and space projections. Station utilization provides a measure of the percentage of seats (stations) that are being used in a room. Station utilization is done for instructional space types only. Instructional space types are classrooms, lecture halls, labs and physical education spaces. Station utilization takes the total number of hours students occupy instructional stations and compares it to the weekly student contact hour goal for that instruction type.
SUNY's space projection process is based primarily on its Physical Space Inventory and Course and Section Analysis (CASA) databases. The former records net square feet (NSF) assigned to departments and functions while the latter depicts student contact hours. These information sources are maintained by campus personnel. Additionally, a substantial file of department level instructional space factors and the standard models for determining academic support space are the foundation to the process.
More specific information is presented in SUCF's Physical Space Inventory Manual.
